Since I am done with track work lets change it and other items!

Yes, the title says it all.  I was totally done with ALL my track work.  Done on both the upper and lower levels, feeder wires, the whole thing.  But, I was not too happy with the sand loading facility trackage and the double diamond, so I ripped it all out.

So I got some changes:

• No more diamonds or city junction
• The VA Midland receives another industry: the elevator at Mid-Atlantic Feeds.  
• The sand facility will have more trackage with 2 spurs
• With the elimination of the diamond, there will only be 2 signals in this area.

I really wanted to keep the diamond, but it only makes sense and what I had was very unprototypical.

Here's what I am doing.  This all makes more sense and will be a better operation.  It s a quick fix and the only hard part is redoing the feeder wires.   Moving the sand unloader will be no fun either.

No, it's not a wiring nightmare, I'm installing some LED lighting on the upper level. 

Got these light poles about a year ago.  I installed them around the layout, but never hooked them up.  Here's an example of one.  Got them off Ebay from China cheap.  

They definitely put out the light!  Almost too much.

Not a lot to show for and now N scale

This Fall has been quite busy for me and the modeling and the layout has come to a standstill.  This past week I was on the run it seems everyday after work.  I squeezed a few minutes of decaling out this week and that's about it.  That decaling would be on my Ex-KCS SD50.  I put VMID reporting marks on it and patched the red KCS on the long hood.  I wanted to cover up the entire KCS in red but it hard to do with white trim film.  So I'm going with a faded KCS maybe with a stripe across it. This is common for short line units that I have seen. Here's a prototype: BB GP40-3  An example would be this model I did for the Buckingham Branch Railroad:

This was a loco I did for a customer back in 2011.  Based on the prototype still running in this scheme.

I went to a train show last weekend and my sons talked me into a n scale layout.  My oldest had been all over this for about a year now.  I was not sure that he was ready, but I took the plunge and bought a huge lot of Kato Uni-track and loco and a couple of cars.  This past Sunday, we build a "L" shaped layout in their room.

Simple construction and doesn't  take up much space.

Definitely got the Detroit Tiger theme going on in here!

Here the GP38-2 the boys picked out.  Good runner and right now we are sticking to DC.  It can be converted to DCC if needed.

Here are the 2 cars the boys picked out.  Nicely detailed and they run well.

The overall scene.  Got to get some fascia for the background and a few more turnouts.  Not bad for a few hours of work on Sunday afternoon.

Hear is the Ex-KCS SD50 that will be working on the Midland.  The 6 axle power is a new trend on the VMID.  A tsunami was installed in in and being a Proto 2000 loco, it runs and well and is very heavy.

Here's another 6 axle power loco.  It's a Kato mid-production run.  Picked it up at the RPM meet for a great price.  It too will be patched for the VMID.

Track Adjustments

It’s been a while since my last update, and even though I’ve been very busy with work, I’ve spent the last month and a half fine tuning my wiring and most of all, the track. I have not had much time to make any significant structural progress in the last little while, so I’ve spent the little time I’ve had to make adjustments to my track to ensure my engines run as smoothly as possible. As this is my first layout, every aspect of this project is a huge learning curve.

When I originally laid my track, I did not realize how extremely important it was to ensure track was perfectly level, especially through a curve or a curved grade. Even the smallest inconsistency in track level is enough to derail an engine. I found that these inconsistencies were most common where 2 pieces of track joined together. To solve this, I make sure each adjoining piece was perfectly level, then soldered them together to make sure they didn’t come apart afterwards. For areas where the actual road bed wasn’t level, I used thin foam risers under the track to keep the track perfectly level (as seen below).

I spent a lot of time running each of my engines back and forth over several section of problem track, closely watching each wheel to make sure it wasn’t lifting off the track. I managed to work out all the problem areas I was having, and everything runs a lot smoother. I also had to make a few small adjustments with my wiring, but nothing major.
I am now into the planning stages of building the actual ground terrain and elevations of my layout, which I hope to have completed by the end of May. I’m also trying to find the best way to build the standards for my trackside signals to mount to.
