OHW Catenary

         HO scale Overhead wiring/Catenary..

The very mention of it amongst modellers here in Australia brings raised eyebrows and the age old " it's too hard to install isn't it, and you'll snag it with something, just have the poles with no wires".

I decided from the start to have a complete catenary setup with wires,poles and gantry's.

Several European brands of HO catenary are available, but none of them match the type we have here in Sydney. Some are close, but not the same. Therefore all parts will be scratchbuilt to suit the layout.

Cronulla, and most of the cronulla branch line had telegraph(wooden) masts holding the overhead wiring from the start, some of these wooden masts were still in use up until the 90's in addition to the later metal replacements. Below are the first few masts I've built.

Different Scales in Model Trains

Model trains come in various scales (gauges):

Ø      Z 1:220 (with all the letters identifying gauges Z became the smallest so they used the last letter in the alphabet)

Ø      N  (rails are Nine mm apart- hence the N) 1:160 **

Ø      HO  (Half O or ‘aitch oh’) 1:87  **

Ø      OO  - 1:76 runs on HO track and is the British version of HO

Ø      S   scale 1:64

Ø      O   (was referred as zero (or 0h) gauge) 1:48

Ø      G (Garden) 1:20.3 to 1:32

Ø      T is the newest (Tiny scale) and is the width of a pencil

Ø      There are many more gauges, although they are important to die-hard railroaders, we will not be listing them here.  Many of our staff is well versed in the different scales and would be happy to review them with you to make a stronger choice for what works for you.

Gauge refers to the width of the track, measured between the railheads.  Different from scale, which is proportion to life-size.

Throwback Thursday 14 TH B GP7 77 at Guelph Junction July 18 1984

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to July 18, 1984; it’s late in the day at Guelph Junction, located 39.2 miles up the Galt Sub from Toronto. Guelph Junction is an interesting place on the Galt Sub, and is the location where the Hamilton Sub joins the Galt Sub (from the south) and where the Goderich sub branches off northward to Guelph (cut back from Goderich in the late 1980’s). What remains of the Goderich Sub is owned by the city of Guelph (the only municipally-owned common carrier railway line in Canada) and now operated by shortline Ontario Southland Railway. Interestingly, the two branches are not directly connected to each other, but a pair of wyes (facing north and south) are used to bring trains on or off the Hamilton/Goderich subdivisions. Guelph Junction also marks the end of CTC territory originating in Toronto, and where OCS track warrant territory continues another 74 miles to London (except for CTC islands at Wolverton and London). A GO transit storage facility was located here for a number of years, used to store GO commuter trainsets used on the Milton line in the evenings or on weekends. Discontinued a few years ago when a new layover facility was constructed in Milton, use of the yard is now confined to OSR/CP interchange to the shortline. At one time, the Goderich sub featured a daily-except-Sunday passenger train from Hamilton to Goderich, usually powered by one of the road’s quaint 4-4-4 Jubilee engines, and included an unusual reverse move at the junction to cross the Galt sub (northward train would pull around south wye, back down the Galt sub, and carry on northward around the north wye and onto Goderich). If a Jubilee wasn’t available, or if the regular engine broke down, a spare engine stationed at the junction would be used to power the local passenger train. Often this was a P-1 or P-2 Mikado, which made for quite the interesting little passenger train! Additional passenger service was provided by a CP gas-electric doodlebug based out of Guelph, and often made several round trips between Guelph and the junction (about 15 miles) per day.

Through the viewfinder, we observe a pair of TH&B geeps, GP7 #77 and GP9 #401. The subject train (though apparently absent of cars this day) is the Goderich Turn, operated north out of TH&B’s Aberdeen yard to its’ namesake port on Lake Huron. An interesting operation, the train commonly operated with TH&B-supplied power, often with just a single unit. This is especially interesting considering the steep descent down the Niagara Escarpment from Guelp Junction and the TH&B units’ lack of dynamic brakes. The pair of units on today’s train is an interesting anomaly, considering TH&B’s common practice of using borrowed engines to power its’ own trains. It appears that the train is making a switching move at the time of this photo – note the conductor with his large shoulder-slung radio appears to have just lined the main line switch back to the normal position. Most of what is visible in this photo is now gone – the CP Chevy van undoubtedly disposed of after years of service, and the station demolished to make way for additional GO Transit storage tracks, the TH&B geeps, and even the train order semaphore, a Guelph Junction landmark for decades. But for at least a moment back in July 1984 we can imagine what the geeps’ 567 engines sounded like while switching at the Junction.

28th Street Yard Initial Sketch

An initial sketch for the Erie 28th Street Yard

I can get the Terminal Stores Warehouse and the 28th Street Yard in a 5'x8' area, to include the float bridge, elevated road and street track of the NYC and Lehigh Valley, I would need an additional 4' in length. hmmm.(Vince Lee and David Ramos are also building versions of the 28th Street Yards.)

Of course, the idea is to stack several yards from around New York Harbor on top of each other (see my article in LDJ no.38 about the Dial-a-Yard concept) , so how the other yards shake out will determine what the overall benchwork size will be. Height of building will be a severe limiter, also, as the Terminal Warehouse is several stories tall. Other New York Harbor yards desired are the DL&W Harlem Transfer Terminal, Erie's 149th Street, maybe the CNJ Bronx Terminal (which Tim Warris is building also),  and either the B.E.D.T. or the Jay Street Connecting RR. There are a lot of yards to choose from around the harbor, so this is by no means a final list!

Buildings and streets and water

... Oh, my!

Latest plan with details starting to flesh out the scenery.

Of particular note is the center peninsula with 14th Street running almost the entire length terminating in the viaduct that climbs the hillside to West Hoboken. Instead of having a backdrop that divides the scene, I am opting for a scene that divides the scene. (Buildings are only placeholders at the moment, more specific prototype footprints to come.) This will provide some good urban density to the layout which will give context to the bustle of the industrial railroading. The goal is to capture how the railroad is sandwiched between the Hudson River and a dense urban fabric. The track has been pulled toward the aisles on both sides to accommodate a wider street (Faller car system?!).

Some minor evolution at the end of the peninsula with the domino at the Bethlehem piers shrinking to 18 inch depth. This has already been implemented and provides better reach to tracks as well as more room in the aisle. The minimum aisle width is now 4'-2". What isn't showing is a closet in the Erie pier area (bottom right) that leaves about an 18 inch clearance between it and the peninsula at the moment. I've tricked myself into thinking the closet is going away, but doubts are creeping into the picture...

At the moment there is some spatial distortion taking place with the street grid - we'll see if it remains. The streets above the HBS yard are the same streets that cross the peninsula at 14th Street as 14th actually runs above the yard in real life. The industries above the yard are in the alley in the block between 14th and 15th Streets. A modeling compromise that seems OK at the moment.

A couple of strong personal ties to the history of Hoboken will be a part of the layout. I've added a baseball field to represent Elysian Field and the birth of The Game, and Hamilton and Burr (an ancestor of mine) will be dueling somewhere around there as well.

I've also got some room for big ship models.

Next steps on the plan will be to tighten up the streets (it's a little hard to manipulate shapes in Rail Modeler), check buildings and track more closely against maps and images, and make out a shopping list for track.

Next bit of constructing will be on the 149th to complete its transformation to a lightweight layout so the room can become a guest room again. I've only got a couple of more weeks of concerted work time before I get crazy busy again for the next nine months.
