This past week has been a blessing in disguise. We had around 2 feet of snow last weekend which gave me even more time to rest up before going back to work this past Friday. I also spent lots of time in the layout room catching up on things and starting new projects. I still have to take it easy and of course I didn't have to shovel all that damn snow. My wife and my oldest son took care of that. My neighbor even plowed out our driveway. With all that going on, I retreated to the the train room and got back into my comfort zone.
Here are some of the things I started last week:

Here's another project coming up. My layout is broken down into blocks controlled by the Atlas switches in green on the right. Plan on adding toggles on the switch layout and opening up that area on the lower level.
New boxcar for the VMID. It's a Ex CP paper boxcar made by Sylvan scale. The resin kit was completely built and only needed paint! Looks good in VMID green.
Another forgotten project. Don't know why I stopped, Oh wait, yellow still. From there she's all down hill. Yes, the gray paint is way light by I will darken it up with weathering. Kato shell.
It has been quite some time since my last blog and the layout hasn't had many updates either. There is, however, enough to continue where I had left off. In this issue I will be discussing track weathering, the new- but no longer a town section, and wrapping up with a description of my simple signaling project.
With all the ballasting work complete and glued down solid and the rails painted, weathering can begin. To weather the track I have used powdered chalks. These will go on light enough per swipe that they can be easily worked to get the right look. I start with powdered charcoal (black), applying streaks parallel to the rails to replicate oil drippings. Next, I use powdered rust to run along either side of the rails. The pure rust colour is rather intense compared to most of the colouring seen around the prototype, which is why I only apply it beside the rails where the effect should be heaviest. The track almost always has a coating of rusted steel dust (assuming that is what it is) which is not quite as bright as the pure rust colour, to fix this I mix the rust colour with some brown and tan powders. Once I’m happy with the shade of dust (by testing it on a hidden section of track) I will dust it between and on either side of the rails. The dust should spread out just past the ties and settles rather evenly all along. The dust should not create a clear line on the edges though, it should only be lightly applied so that the transition between ballast and dust is smooth. That’s the extent of my weathering, not an awful lot to it but it adds a nice touch to the realism.
Next I would like to talk about my new development which sits past the east end of the tunnels. I was originally planning to place a small town in this area, however, I changed my mind after viewing some other mountain layouts. They made me realize I need some more dynamic landscape to go with the mountains right next to it. There wasn't a lot of space for large hills but there was enough to raise up from the bottom level to the top level seamlessly. Plus I now had a remote helper station at the bottom of either grade, perfect for operations. I started out with some old hill pieces I had laying around, cutting them and gluing them into place. I then filled in the openings with thick packaging paper which will eventually be coated in plaster and painted to match the existing pieces. It is still in rough stages but has a nice look to it with the sheds and helpers sitting aside with some trees and steep grassy hills behind.
The last point to be discussed in this issue is the signals on my layout. At the moment I have seven signals automatically controlling the junction which either bypasses the mountain route or heads down one of the grades. The signals are mainly scratch built, made to resemble typical CPR signals. To automate them, I have taken the easy way out for the time being. I have taken advantage of a Circuitron road intersection signal system. This board has outputs for two directions, just enough for a simple intersection. The timings between light changes can be easily changed, and the yellow light outputs can be used as another route separate to the red and green outputs. I wired it so that there is four points which can get clearance over the others. I wired the less used directions into the shorter length yellow output, and then used the other two sets of red/green outputs. The key to this wiring layout was to not think of the red/yellow/green outputs as colours corresponding to the signals, but rather as outputs that will turn on and off automatically. This little board can control a good number of LED signals, so I didn’t stop at the main junction signals, I added some intermediate signals which copy what is displayed ahead of them. Now, while this is not a detection based signal system, it is a nice way to make the signals change on their own and add some interest to your layout. In an operations sense, my layout will likely only ever see one operator so detection signaling is not necessary, these automated signals allow me to have to watch the signals and occasionally stop for a signal. It is a cheap and easy way to add a little more excitement to your layout.
That concludes the fifth installment of the Thompson River route blog. There is not a lot left to do on the route with only one more tunnel to plaster, paint, and scenic. Beyond that I will complete the east hill section and helper station. There will be a blog showing the completion of this project with some good train action along the way. ~~Tyler Fedoroshyn

Being off the last 2 weeks you would think I would have time for lots of model railroading right? Not so much. Been busy on the homestead with shopping, cooking and the holidays. Modeling time has taken a back seat and really I haven't been feeling the MR vibe. I've done a few things, but nothing major. The last two days have been productive and I'm probably realizing I have to go to work on Monday! I also have been rolling out of the bed at 8:00 or later too so that doesn't help much. So in the last two days, I've installed a Tortoise on the lower level on the Mine Run Branch, removed a Lok sound decoder from a loco and installed a Tsunami, and for some reason started to install a valiance over the layout. I've wanted to do this for a while now and just got started yesterday. It will greatly improve the look of the layout room, like the floor has. It's a two person job for a bit but my wife is gone shopping so the main 7 foot section will have to wait until this afternoon.
First section is done. The blue bags are for debris from drilling holes. It will hopefully give the layout a more professional look. Do I do anything professional?
The next section is the longest part. It will hide the light fixture and the all the wiring.
Last section to be installed. Not idea what to do for the yard since it has no shelving above it.
GP39-2 #274 is back in service. This is one of my newest engines that for some reason I put Lok Sound in. Lok Sound sounds great but but adding a capacitor like a (Keep Alive) is not possible. Even tried to add it but still the sound was in and out. I believe Lok Sound has their own KA, but I believe it's in the $50 range.
An amazing thing happened today - something worked. I was able to install a CVP mini-AirWire radio control system "in" an HBS 44tonner, and it worked on the first try. I will ride this feeling for as long as I can.
I used a spare gondola (after converting the couplers to Kadee No.5s) to carry the battery (made for Airsoft guns) and CONVRTR chip along with wiring and a power toggle switch. I attached small plugs to the micro-Tsunami leads and two wires run between gondola and locomotive. I can explain in detail the set up more later if there is interest.
Note: There are no lights in the locomotive, yet. May not ever be, since they didn't operate at night, and several of the terminal railroads didn't require them. I'll have to check if that is the case on the HBS. This locomotive was a problem child, too, when it was just DCC, but it showed none of those signs in the initial run. That points to track pick up as the culprit, and not the Soundtraxx micro-Tsunami decoder. I was thinking that the 750 was getting overloaded and resetting, but apparently not.
I'll need to clean up the wiring now that I know it works, and I may try to put the decoder in the gondola, too, if I can't get it situated inside the locomotive. It keeps the body shell up off the chassis just enough to mess up the body-mounted coupler heights. I may be able to modify the motor enclosure enough that it will lay flat.
There will be a tarp or something over the "load" in the gondola, and the wires will be painted black and as small a gauge as possible. It should end up looking like hoses. The idler car works fine on the HBS, but the Erie 149th Street terminal doesn't have any spare room on a crucial lead.
The parts are not cheap, but then again, what is? The HBS will be an all battery fleet (5-8 locomotives), but the pocket terminals will probably stay DCC since there will be a variety of road names on numerous units - unless the shells are the only things that change...? ;)

A slight change, but noteworthy. I have moved the center peninsula about a foot to the left in order to get more room in the vital area of the layout at the HBS yard. I should end up with ample aisle width in that area to make operators more comfortable. This also reflects the removal of the full-blown Erie yard and RO-RO in favor of just the interchange tracks and more comfortable HBS Yard. This was inspired by Lance Mindheim's observations of operating at Holt's and Barrow's layouts earlier this month.
I will probably reduce the size of the Holland America docks as well, but I'm not worrying about that aisle for a while.That is where the guest bed will be placed as well (may end up being a blow-up king size mattress.)

Finally finished the scenery on the upper level. I redid the scenery in the corner the cat destroyed a few months back. I also completed the last "bare plywood" in the VC area. This area has been voided of scenery for a number of reasons. Main reason: it was a repair/maintenance spot. But it's done! Now you are wondering what got me into high gear. I had people coming by to look at the layout today. Nothing like a deadline to get you going!

Thought I had completed the final track for this layout and I look like I'm headed down a redo of the lower level. Not a total redo but one that will make the layout flow. It includes a lift-out crossing and staging near the helix. A wye will be put in to have continuous running on the lower level. I will also redo the town names mainly switching them around.
