The Newest Addition Rapido GMD 1 1118 Engine

The newest addition to my collection, a Rapido GMD-1 1100 series replica of diesel engine #1118 from the Alberta Prairie Railroad. This model was given to me as a gift from my employer, which is definitely one of the most unique, personalized, and thoughtful thank-you gifts I’ve ever received. Best of all, the engine is local, and is still in service today.

The engine itself runs on a daily excursion line (Alberta Prairie Railroad Excursions) between Stettler and Big Valley, right here in Alberta, Canada. The Excursion line features mostly older steam engines, however the GMD-1 #1118 is used to help out when needed. This model from Rapido, in association with MLW, is available in both DC and DCC, and comes in several road numbers and paint schemes. Furthermore, sounds for this model were all recorded directly from engine #1118.

Norfolk Southern to Recreate Legacy Railroad Paint Schemes

Just got this heads up from friend Gerry Fitzgerald. I'm torn between really liking the idea of seeing the fallen flags as faithful reproductions and wishing it were going to be handled like the very sharp Union Pacific heritage fleet interpretative liveries. This will be lots of fun.


Norfolk Southern to debut heritage fleet

NORFOLK, Va. — To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Norfolk & Western/Southern merger in 1982, Norfolk Southern plans to honor many of the railroads that make up the present day NS system. As Union Pacific did a half-decade ago, NS plans to create a fleet of heritage locomotives, though NS’s plans are bigger: 18 units honoring a wide variety of predecessor roads.

The locomotives will be 10 SD70ACes on order from EMD that are being constructed at its Muncie, Ind., plant, and eight ES44ACs from an upcoming order for 25 units from GE. While EMD will paint all 10 heritage units in-house, NS forces will paint the eight GEs. The railroad’s Altoona, Pa., shop will paint five, while the Chattanooga, Tenn., shop will handle three heritage units.

The 18 predecessor railroads selected for heritage paint are:

• Erie Lackawanna
• Lehigh Valley (red)
• New Haven (not definite yet)

Confectionary facility work continues

Settled on the final name of the confectionary plant: Chespeake Valley Confectionary, Inc or CVC for short.  Here is the final layout and the walls all are secured together.  Now comes the tough part, the roof for the facility.  Lots of cutting and trial and error.  The color of the building will be close to the yellow already on it.  The mortar on the office turned out well.  Progress will continue this week.

Lipton Tea Building

First part of the Thomas J Lipton Tea Building mock up (white, 3/16" foam core). This 12 story building served by the HBS is 165ft tall in a U configuration around three tracks. This is a good candidate for laser cutting, since it has a relatively flat facade from its concrete frame and glass infill construction.

The scale of this is impressive. A happy coincidence that there is a large building on the railroad. I like big buildings, but this isn't the reason I chose the HBS to model. This is the tallest building on the layout.

I am being deliberate with all of the buildings (along with everything else), so there will be mock ups and iterations before final models are constructed. At this point I will scratch build every structure. We'll see if that actually happens.

The plan

Here is the railway's line diagram of the area, showing the position of all relevant features such as points,catch points,signals and the relation between the railway areas and the surrounding roads. The single line(from Sydney)appears at the top and runs to the station and 2 sidings at bottom. There is also a long storage siding from the station that leads back towards Sydney parallel to the single mainline.

I know the basic order of train operations for Cronulla as it was, but intend to go there and speak with the stationmaster, if possible, to find out more.

Throwback Thursday 28 CP Winter Action at Galt 1972 2014

The same view as above, 42 years later (3 January 2014). The MLW's are long gone, replaced by an ES44AC and a SD40-2 (also now gone). No longer is this location Galt, but now the city of Cambridge - unless you're a railfan, in which case this will always be Galt!

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to the Winter of 1972. We’re at Galt, ON, standing in front of the CP depot that still bears the name of its’ Scottish novelist namesake (John Galt). A year later, the civic merger of Galt, Preston, and Hespeler would result in the city of Cambridge, where the modern counterpart photo was taken (even though I’m standing essentially where photographer Chuck Begg did 42 years earlier, I’m in another city!).

In this view, we see a CP westbound extra lead by three MLW C424’s, with the lead unit #4238 still in it’s as-delivered classic Tuscan and grey paint scheme. The unit is seven years old, built in 1965, and would survive another three years before being repainted to CP’s attractive Action Red paint scheme in early 1975. The engine would serve its original owner for 33 years until a sale in 1998 to New Brunswick East Coast Railway took the unit to the Maritimes. As Alco/MLW technology faded from the shortline scene, the unit was sold for parts to sister railroad Ottawa Central before being scrapped in March 2004.

Not only are the Burlington Route boxcar and the head-end stock cars long gone, but the scene itself has changed substantially as well. Absent in Chuck’s photo is the #8 highway/Dundas St. bridge constructed over the Galt yard and Galt Sub mainline. Auto traffic now dominates activity in the yard with a Toyota manufacturing plant located on the old Grand River Railway line a few miles north of the yard (the line merges into the yard near the Burlington boxcar on the other side of Samuelson street). 

Though the scene has changed, Galt is still a busy place with several through freights and a daily local passing through on the main line. A pair of locals based at Wolverton yard east of Woodstock also call on the yard, heading up the old GRR line (CP Waterloo spur) to serve the Toyota plant. Additionally, the station and freight shed still stand, so it’s still possible to relive the scene in Chuck’s photo – too bad the MLW’s are gone though!

Model Railroading Scales What Do the Letters Mean

     Model railroading is fascinating and has been dubbed by many as the “World’s Greatest Hobby”.   It is very versatile and incorporates many learning opportunities and is so much fun for all ages. It includes creativity with sculpturing, painting, airbrushing, decorating and landscaping, and encourages scientific exploration of electronics, physics, mechanics, engineering and architecture, all combined with humour, friendship, family activities, social interaction, and the great sense of accomplishment.

Many people who visit us ask if there is significance to the letter referral to different size trains; N, HO, O, G, etc.  The answer is YES!!  We've compiled a list of all the scales and why they were named with that letter designation.

T - Ø 1:450 (referred to as 'Tiny' or 'Tokyo' as it was introduced at the Tokyo Toy Show in 2006)

ZZ - Ø 1:300 (Until the 2006 announcement of T scale, ZZ scale was the smallest commercially available scale for model railroads)

Z - Ø  1:220 (with all the letters identifying gauges Z became the smallest so they used the last letter in the alphabet)

N - Ø 1:160 (track gauge is 9mm, the N stands for Nine mm)

2mm - Ø 1:152 (similar in size to the slightly larger British N scale at 1:148 and the slightly smaller European/American N scale at 1:160; it predates both versions of N scale)

TT - Ø 1:120 (referred to as Table Top as it fit so easily on coffee tables)

3mm - Ø 1:101 (also known as 3 mm finescale, is a model railway scale of 3 mm: 1ft used for British prototypes. Introduced as British TT gauge)

OO- Ø 1:76 (Runs on HO track and is the British counterpart)

HOn3 - Ø 1:87 (The "n" in HOn3 stands for 'narrow gauge', HOn3 is still HO scale)

HO - Ø 1:87 (Half O or ‘aitch oh’)

S - Ø 1:64 (First named Standard Gauge then to represent that Scale that was half of 1 gauge which was built to 1:32 scale)

On3 - Ø 1:48 (is narrow gauge O scale)

O - Ø 1:48 (was referred as zero (or 0h) gauge)

G - Ø  1:22.5 ( G stands for Garden)

Live Steam - Ø  1:2, 1:4 or 1:3 scale  (Ridable, large-scale, powered by steam)

Gauge refers to the width of the track, measured between the railheads.  Different from scale, which is proportion to life-size.

Pre Fall Update

Almost five months has passed since my last post, and unfortunately I have made little progress over the summer, mostly due to my schedule being insanely busy. However, with the leaves turning yellow and snow on the mountain-tops west on the horizon, my sights are now turning back to my layout now that I find myself staying indoors more often. Plus, a little break from something you love doing never hurts.

Structurally, I think everything is done. I try to find things to add, or even modify, however find that quite often more is definitely not better. Details on the other hand, there can never be enough of those, so I will be looking into further detailing, including figures, wildlife, foliage, etc. Vehicles and rolling stock also still need to be added. I have done a little experimenting with weathering trains, though I will unquestionably need more practice at this point before I start on anything worth any significant value. Acquiring HO scale vehicles also seems to still be quite difficult.

I have some new photos attached to this post, taken for a recent photo-book that I put together showing the visual progression of my layout. These photos were just taken last week, and as you can see there is nothing really new.
