Track Plan

I took a few minutes on the weekend to sketch a trackplan of the layout. I tried to create one digitally in paint or Powerpoint but that proved to be nothing more than an exercise in frustration; I'll revisit that another day... Anyway, the attached is a somewhat-freehand pencil drawing that shows all track planned and in place. I'd estimate that the trackwork is about 70% done, with the balance to be laid on the east (bottom in the sketch) spur, grain elevator tracks and the shop area. The names of some of the tracks and industries have been added in Photoshop. I'll create another post later on to describe the industries to be modeled and car types/switching operations. 

At the moment, the plan is to have the trackwork on the spur and grain elevator completed within two weeks, and if that goes according to schedule, some photos will follow. I can't wait to get down to switching cars! The track gang is still assembling materials and completing the final details for the shop area and roundhouse. A turntable has been acquired and the next step will be to cut a hole in the plywood to mount it. From there, the trackwork details can be ironed out. I'll have to remember to have a gold spike ceremony once the last one is driven in; until then, thanks for stopping by...

Various work happening on the Midland

Spent the last two weeks doing multiple things in the office.  This includes weathering for a client,experimenting with Pan Pastels and working on a new industry.  Here are my progress photos:

Here's the smaller elevator I chose to add to Orange.  Like most Walthers buildings, they never go together well.  Had to add putty to the seam.  Even though it's a smaller elevator, it barely fits between the levels.

Here it is squeezed between the levels.  The lower level was never planned for the layout and just kinda happened.  I would like more room between the levels but it works fine for ops.

As you can see, I had move the elevator spur.  This gives plenty of room for the structure.  The closest track will be the Norfolk Southern interchange.

May have to change the lights in this area.  Wiring needs to be stapled up.

Some grain hoppers spotted. Will add a grain bin or two to the scene along with a office.   

A new gondola for the Midland.  Been wanting to do a gon with VM spelled out and finally got around to doing one.  This is an Atlas 53 footer.  It definitely needs to be weathered and a tie load added.

This is a Ebay win about a month ago.  It's an old Sylvan resin kit that was totally assembled.  It's an Ex-CP paper boxcar but will enter a second life on the Midland.

 TrainMasters TV from MRH has been running a great weathering series from Mike Confalone in the last month.  He's been  weathering various cars with oils and Pan Pastels.  I finally broke down and bought some back at the February Timonium show.  There not cheap but shop around to find the best price.  Finally tried them out and they work well.  Worked with the Pan Pastels and some oils to weather a Bowser 100 ton Reading hopper.  This was my practice hopper and it turned out quite well.  I'm planning to add CSXT reporting marks and put it in service.

Freight Car Friday PROX 17386 at Aldershot ON 5 08 2015

PROX 17386 is seen at Aldershot, ON on 5-08-2015, a day after being released from the Procor Oakville shop, where the car had interior coating and new paint applied. The car was built by UTLX Manufacturing in Sheldon, TX in April 2015, and features the new end platform design. 

Freight Car Friday tonight features PROX 17386, a brand new 13,800 gal sulfuric acid tank car built for Procor Limited by UTLX Manufacturing at Sheldon, TX. The car is part of an order that is being built in Texas and shipped to the Procor shop at Oakville, ON for painting and interior coating; part of this order is being painted and coated at the Union Tank Car shop at Altoona, PA. While the overall sulfuric acid tank car arrangement hasn’t changed in many years, this car exemplifies some recent changes that were made to tank car design. The first and perhaps most obvious is the addition of a pressure-car style fittings protection assembly on the top of the car. All fittings are now enclosed within the housing rather than on separate nozzles. Secondly, all cars built after January 1, 2015 are required to have the new style end platform safety appliance design. Whereas previous cars only had a crossover handrail along the transverse running board, the new design mandates an extra grab iron so that railroad personnel can have three-point attachment when riding the car. Additionally, new lower steps are mandated that do not exceed a height of 17” above the rails. The new safety appliance design consumed additional space at the ends of the car, requiring the air brake reservoir to be placed underneath the car (as had been done on cars built in the 1960’s). A further change is that cars on this order are painted white, at customer request, which is something that had all but disappeared from the Procor acid car fleet as previously-white cars had been painted black at time of coating replacement.

Modeling on the cheap

Well, it's Labor Day and that means one thing for me, back to teaching (or work).  I actually worked all last week and as calendar turns to September today, my modeling time will be limited to evenings.  I wanted to do an interesting blog post and thought of it today.  Modeling on the cheap.  If your like me, I find the cheapest price that I can find and somethings you only have one place you can get an item.  This goes for all modeling items like sound decoders, locos, freight cars, scenic items and the like.  Not being close to a hobby shop also limits my going out and buying things.  So what are some of the ways I save money in this expensive hobby:

• My favorite online place is MB Kleins.  Their prices are rarely beat and they ship quick. http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/

• Scenic Express:  They have the best scenic supplies hands down and run specials every week.                http://www.scenicexpress.com/
• Train shows:  These are the hidden jewels, especially the smaller ones.  Great deals can always be found.
• Home Depot:  I go here for most of my lumber since it's close and pay full price but you can find paint that customers did not want for cheap.  Got a sample earth color the other day for fifty cents!      These samples are more manageable than the gallon cans.
•   AC Moore:  I go here for many items and I never pay full price.  Brushes, Dullcote, Elmers       glue (big jugs), paint (spray, oils and acrylics) florist foam, etc.  They always run coupons  in the paper, your email address or even on their app for your smart phones.   On top of it, they give a 15% discount to teachers ;-).  Yesterday I went there to get some materials for a water scene and had a 55% off one item coupon.   Michael's is OK but a high traffic area in my neck of the woods!
• I have also built a static grass applicator from an electric flyswatter.  Pretty easy to do.  I'm always saving items to use for modeling purposes like storage containers and anything I think I might can use.  Let me know of any of your tricks you may have in the comments below!

Since I am done with track work lets change it and other items!

Yes, the title says it all.  I was totally done with ALL my track work.  Done on both the upper and lower levels, feeder wires, the whole thing.  But, I was not too happy with the sand loading facility trackage and the double diamond, so I ripped it all out.

So I got some changes:

• No more diamonds or city junction
• The VA Midland receives another industry: the elevator at Mid-Atlantic Feeds.  
• The sand facility will have more trackage with 2 spurs
• With the elimination of the diamond, there will only be 2 signals in this area.

I really wanted to keep the diamond, but it only makes sense and what I had was very unprototypical.

Here's what I am doing.  This all makes more sense and will be a better operation.  It s a quick fix and the only hard part is redoing the feeder wires.   Moving the sand unloader will be no fun either.

No, it's not a wiring nightmare, I'm installing some LED lighting on the upper level. 

Got these light poles about a year ago.  I installed them around the layout, but never hooked them up.  Here's an example of one.  Got them off Ebay from China cheap.  

They definitely put out the light!  Almost too much.

Not a lot to show for and now N scale

This Fall has been quite busy for me and the modeling and the layout has come to a standstill.  This past week I was on the run it seems everyday after work.  I squeezed a few minutes of decaling out this week and that's about it.  That decaling would be on my Ex-KCS SD50.  I put VMID reporting marks on it and patched the red KCS on the long hood.  I wanted to cover up the entire KCS in red but it hard to do with white trim film.  So I'm going with a faded KCS maybe with a stripe across it. This is common for short line units that I have seen. Here's a prototype: BB GP40-3  An example would be this model I did for the Buckingham Branch Railroad:

This was a loco I did for a customer back in 2011.  Based on the prototype still running in this scheme.

I went to a train show last weekend and my sons talked me into a n scale layout.  My oldest had been all over this for about a year now.  I was not sure that he was ready, but I took the plunge and bought a huge lot of Kato Uni-track and loco and a couple of cars.  This past Sunday, we build a "L" shaped layout in their room.

Simple construction and doesn't  take up much space.

Definitely got the Detroit Tiger theme going on in here!

Here the GP38-2 the boys picked out.  Good runner and right now we are sticking to DC.  It can be converted to DCC if needed.

Here are the 2 cars the boys picked out.  Nicely detailed and they run well.

The overall scene.  Got to get some fascia for the background and a few more turnouts.  Not bad for a few hours of work on Sunday afternoon.

Hear is the Ex-KCS SD50 that will be working on the Midland.  The 6 axle power is a new trend on the VMID.  A tsunami was installed in in and being a Proto 2000 loco, it runs and well and is very heavy.

Here's another 6 axle power loco.  It's a Kato mid-production run.  Picked it up at the RPM meet for a great price.  It too will be patched for the VMID.

Track Adjustments

It’s been a while since my last update, and even though I’ve been very busy with work, I’ve spent the last month and a half fine tuning my wiring and most of all, the track. I have not had much time to make any significant structural progress in the last little while, so I’ve spent the little time I’ve had to make adjustments to my track to ensure my engines run as smoothly as possible. As this is my first layout, every aspect of this project is a huge learning curve.

When I originally laid my track, I did not realize how extremely important it was to ensure track was perfectly level, especially through a curve or a curved grade. Even the smallest inconsistency in track level is enough to derail an engine. I found that these inconsistencies were most common where 2 pieces of track joined together. To solve this, I make sure each adjoining piece was perfectly level, then soldered them together to make sure they didn’t come apart afterwards. For areas where the actual road bed wasn’t level, I used thin foam risers under the track to keep the track perfectly level (as seen below).

I spent a lot of time running each of my engines back and forth over several section of problem track, closely watching each wheel to make sure it wasn’t lifting off the track. I managed to work out all the problem areas I was having, and everything runs a lot smoother. I also had to make a few small adjustments with my wiring, but nothing major.
I am now into the planning stages of building the actual ground terrain and elevations of my layout, which I hope to have completed by the end of May. I’m also trying to find the best way to build the standards for my trackside signals to mount to.
