Winter Layout Work Update Part 2

I think I promised this a long time ago, but I finally found some time to photograph and write about some more of the progress made on the layout in the last couple of weeks. Without further delay, onto the photos!

My brother Mark made quick work of installing rails in the Stelco rolling mill. As-designed, Walthers intended for cars to roll into the building on channels cast into the floor of the mill, not on actual rails. This meant that it was not possible to operate a locomotive in the building, as there was no way to supply power, nor actual rails to be powered. Mark carved channels into the floor large enough to lay some code 83 rail inside, secured by CA glue. At the moment, the end panels of the building are not installed, but will be once work on the interior is completed. Elsewhere, gaps in the ties are being filled with spare ties in preparation for painting and ballasting to be completed soon.

With the rails installed in the building, we can finally spot cars for loading inside!

CN 7203 lifts a pair of loads from the coil yard.

Additional work on the switches has been completed, exchanging the existing throw-bars with copper-foil covered ties (to isolate each half electrically). With the shop tracks to the shop building now installed, the only remaining track to be laid on the layout is the two tracks to the turntable and the four tracks to the roundhouse/RIP track. I’ll post a future update about the shop building and roundhouse, but for now I should mention that they will be essentially side-by-side, with the intent to separate steam and diesel servicing operations. The roundhouse is a modified three-stall Atlas kit that Mark extensively reworked to make the track angular separation suitable use with our turntable (larger than the Atlas version); the Atlas roundhouse is set up for 15° track spacing, whereas our turntable requires spacing of about 10°. The diesel shop is a scratchbuilt representation of the CN shop at Stuart street yard in Hamilton, Ontario, though I made my version longer than the prototype in order to fit an SD9043MAC inside.

Mark made a panel to hold electrical switches to isolate the shop tracks from the rest of the layout. The three installed are for the diesel shop tracks, and the other two are for the lead tracks to the turntable (and roundhouse). 

Mark has also done some more electrical work on the layout. Some more feeders have helped improve operational reliability and the shop tracks have been isolated such that power can be stored on the layout without consuming power.

The newly-installed shop tracks with some of my modern-era CN power laying over between jobs. Zebra-stripes galore!

Ballast

When I go to exhibitions, one of the main things I zero in on is the ballasting on each layout. I believe ballast is one of those things that can make or break a diorama depending on how realistic it looks. So I  like to see how each modeller tackles it.

I have crushed some actual ballast from the local area and if I can crush enough of it, I will use it. It should replicate the local ballast well considering it IS local ballast.
I am going to weather the rails with rust colour, the rails at Cronulla being particularly rusty on the sides due to the salt air from the sea nearby. I will probably airbrush some thinned light browny/grey over the rails and the ballast when laid.
Layouts that have weathered ballast look better in my opinion(as long as the weathering is subtle and appropriately coloured)

From a thread on Trainboard about new Z scale boxcars, Mike Skibbe summed up my feelings about many manufacturer shortcomings. Check this out.

There is a misnomer that "Prototype Modelers" and "Rivet Counters" take things too seriously and arn't having fun. Things couldn't be further from the truth. We have tons of fun doing what we do too. The fun just comes in different ways. This is similar to the on-going debates about Tony Koester/Bill Darnaby hard core operators vs roundy-round runners. Many people say, "Oh, too many rules and it's too much like real work, that would never be fun for me." And they are probably correct, maybe they never would enjoy it. But for those that are really into operations, it's fun to follow the rules! It's fun to treat running trains like it was a real job. It doesn't make either camp wrong, and it certainly doesn't mean either group is "eternally frustrated."

First, the NP geeps MTL just released. I read a review (Model Train News?) that said MTL used a number series on the NP that didn't have dynamic brakes, yet the model does have dynamics. The kicker is, that NP did own geeps with dynamic brakes! MTL just didn't use the right numbers. You say, "We can split hairs on what's "prototypical" or obvious structural differences, or we can strive to do the best we can with what we have and offer Road Names that help folks realize their dream layouts." Would it have cost any more to use the right number series on the NP geeps? Was using the wrong number really "striving to do the best with what's available"?

The N and Z scale RI 40' boxcars in pullman green are another example. MTL put a non-Pullman Standard built number series on their PS1 boxcar body. Yet RI also had a number series that is almost a perfect match for the PS1, with the exact same paint scheme. Doing it right satisfies both the everyday modeler and the prototype modeler. Doing it wrong only satisfies the every day modeler. Why leave out a portion of the customer base, when doing it right doesn't cost any more?

Have You Lost Your Sense of Wonder

     Today I was asked the question, "When was the last time you felt a sense of wonder?". I can honestly say I get to see it every day. I get to see it at home through the eyes of my 6 and 9 year old kids. I love seeing it in our store when a customer comes in and notices the G scale train running around above their heads. To see the kids as they notice the Star Wars movie playing in our toy section and my favourite, to see someone get inspired by one of the dioramas or models we have on display around the store.

At both our North and South store you can see a unique G scale train travelling above your head!

At our South Store you can see this 6 ft. Star Destroyer that is an exact scale replica of the one they used in the Star Wars movie "A New Hope".

When was the last time you felt that sense of wonder? The 'Wow is that cool!' or 'I remember that when I was a kid!'. I asked a few people how they might rekindle their sense of wonder.

1. Look at your next task through the eyes of  a child.
2. Make a list of your favourite things you did/built/played with as a child. Pick something off the list and do it. (look up at the clouds and find shapes for example)
3. Take a different route to work, if you can't then make it a point to notice something different every time you stop at a traffic light. (maybe the grass is turning green or there are more potholes)
4. Forget your cell phone at home and walk around your neighbourhood.

Its amazing how much stress dissolves and what great memories are made when you rediscover your sense of wonder. We look forward to you coming down and experiencing the wonder for yourselves!

Eye in the Sky

As you know I recently installed a helix in my garage.  I want somehow to watch it as the train made progress.  After a little research, I decided to get a security camera from Harbor Freight Tools.  This camera easily plugs into the video section of the TV I have in my office.  The cord is plenty longer and installation only took about 45 minutes.  I spent about $30 on it (using a 20% off coupon).  It does it's purpose and I am very thrilled so far.

Hardest part of the installation was installing the camera on the wall.

I watch DVD's occasionally on the this TV.

VC #5:  She is a Kato GP35.  I recently put on a non-dynamic brake cover and covered the middle radiator fan.  Some kind of rebuild.  I was thinking a GP35R?
